Definition of BIM
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital working method that uses virtual 3D digital models as the basis for planning, designing, building, managing and operating projects. 3D models contain more than just graphical information that allows you to associate properties with each building element (such as material type, performance data, and cost). How does BIM work?
With BIM, each discipline in a project generates its own 3D model of its part of the project and retains control and responsibility for that model. Each of these sub- models is combined into a central coordination model. which contains all the information for each submodel. This information gives meaning to objects (the cubic shape then represents a wall, for example) and describes the objects using properties such as energy properties, material, or weight. In addition, objects can be linked to information outside the model, such as a BOM or a drawing of a part. Transparency and communication are enhanced by using a central coordination model as the basis for assigning tasks among teams, collaborating and managing the design, construction and operation of a building.
